14. Justification of the project

In 1622-1624, Prince Lev Sapega – the Vilna voivode, the Great Hetman of Lithuania – in his patrimonial estate Belynichi granted villages to the Carmelites, as well as “four parade grounds in Belynichi with petty-bourgeois yards and vegetable gardens located on them”. This act laid the foundation for the Carmelite Monastery. The fame of the Belynichsky Monastery was brought by the ancient, revered miraculous icon of the Belynichskaya Mother of God. This icon attracted thousands of pilgrims, both Catholics and Orthodox, to the Carmelite Monastery. The economic prosperity of the monastery was also facilitated by the patronage of two powerful families that owned Byalynichy, namely Sapieha and Oginsky.

In 1978 the monastery buildings were blown up. Only one stairwell has survived, where frescoes of the mid-18th century have been preserved under late plaster, namely the biblical and gospel scenes “Transfiguration” and “The Dream of Jacob”, allegorical – “Carrying the Cross”, “Instruments of the Passion of Christ” and “Symbols of the Arts” and also fragments of wall paintings. A group of artists-restorers removed the compositions of the fresco, bit by bit collected and transferred to the Museum.

In order to preserve and popularize the history and culture of our country, the surviving frescoes of the Belynichi Monastery need to be restored, since today this is the only example of the Mogilev school of monumental painting, which provides significant additions to our understanding of the development of ancient Belarusian painting as a whole.

The museum has a positive experience in the implementation of the proposed project. Thus, in 2003, the Museum, together with OJSC “Minskrestavratsiya”, which has extensive experience in the restoration of works of art and historical and cultural values, in 2013 carried out work on the restoration of elements of the fresco “Peratvarenne Gaspodne”. This fragment of the wall painting of the Belynichi Carmelite Monastery (dating from 1761) served as the beginning of the creation of the exhibition “Preserved Heritage”, which brought together special exhibits, and is its central element.

In September 2020, as part of the events of the Republican Day of Writing, the fresco “Carrying the Cross” was restored, which became the central figure in the exhibition hall “Spirituality” of the art museum named after V.K. Byalynitsky-Biruli in the city of Belynichi.
